We are doing 7 concerts this year. Each One will have it’s own vibe. Saturday will be a special fundraiser for Wise Reagon Arts, the company I created to produce the opera Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower and the community initiatives the Parable Path, Songs of the Living all Volunteer Community Choir, and the work in progress theatrical projects You are Having Too Much Fun- So We’re Gonna Have to Kill You, EcoTone, and Working On A Building.
Alexis Pauline Gumbs has spent hundreds of hours watching our aquatic cousins. She has found them to be queer, fierce, protective of each other, complex, shaped by conflict, and struggling to survive the extractive and militarized conditions humans have imposed on the ocean.
Octavia’s Parables is a podcast where hosts Toshi Reagon and adrienne maree brown read the works of Octavia Butler one chapter at a time, bringing a modern analysis and scholarship to the work, and offering listeners guiding questions for applying the lessons in their own lives and community work.
Toshi is foremost a singer and songwriter but also an accomplished music director for theater, dance and opera and in-demand producer for numerous recording artists.
Here are some of her recent projects:
The Parable of the Sower Opera is a stirring adaptation of Octavia E. Butler's renowned 1993 novel, brought to the stage by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon. It's not just music and narrative; it's a call to action, urging us to consider our own place in a rapidly changing world.
Songs of the Living is part of the Parable Path, which features talks and rituals centered in collaborative living that draw inspiration from the classic sci-fi novel by the late Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Sower.
Songs of the Living features a community choir that will direct the audience through an open and engaging evening of song, dance, and deep conversation. Come be a part of this harmonious and challenging exploration of sustainable routes onto the righteous path in an ever-changing world.
A right-now story that uses the era of disco music to steep us in testimony and surface our glorious and soulful truths. Hard to resist the joy of a heartbeat pounding, hard to hide when somebody's calling your name. Hard to hide when you are bathed in beautiful light. Hard to be alone when everyone is moving together.
